About John Frauens
Dr. John Frauens is a Hawaii-based medical practitioner who retired from a position as an orthopedic surgeon and the director of adult reconstructive surgery at Kaiser Permanente in 2010. In that capacity, he oversaw artificial hip and knee replacements, as well as procedures to treat bone tumors. Over the decades, Dr. John Frauens performed approximately 3,000 joint replacements and helped establish Kaiser Hawaii’s Osteoporosis Program. He also guided the hospital’s Total Joint Service program.
Dr. Frauens today is a medical technology entrepreneur and the head of SoftJoint, Inc., which has offices in Honolulu and Charlotte, North Carolina. His firm develops and produces synthetic cartilage for human implantation. Community involved, Dr. Frauens provides volunteer care to prison inmates. He holds a medical degree from Temple University and completed residency and fellowship training in surgery and orthopedics at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Dr. John Frauens played rugby while attending medical school and is a fan of teams such as the NFL Pittsburgh Steelers.
